Seven Shoreline Community College faculty members received tenure following action by the Board of Trustees at the March 18, 2009 meeting.
Receiving tenure by a unanimous vote, were:
Lisa Hirayama – International Programs
Juliet Anderson – Mathematics
Christine Berntsen – Nursing
Kennedy Conder – Criminal Justice
Aura Rios Erickson - Academic Adviser
Leoned Gines – Biology
Lynn Von Schlieder – Nursing
“This is as fine a group as we have seen,” Trustee Gidget Terpstra said.
Before the vote, Trustee Jerry Smith said, “This institution has top-notch people. It is a privilege to be around such quality people.”
Smith added that while the Board reviewed the candidates’ information, it was apparent that they are exceptional educators. “You set very high goals and then as you get close, you hold them off, demanding the most from yourselves,” Smith said.
Trustee Roger Olstad, who has extensive experience with similar reviews at the University of Washington, acknowledged that SCC’s process is the equal of the UW’s and as rigorous as any four-year school in the country.
Friends, family and supporters crowded the board room for the vote, awards and then moved to the gallery for photos.
The trustees also renewed the tenure-track process for nine other faculty members. Those faculty members are:
Maureen Chao –Academic Adviser, International Programs
Cynthia Okawara - Academic Adviser, International Programs
Steven Seki - Academic Adviser, Athletics
Maria Tungol – Advising/Human Development, Running Start
Erin Walker - Academic Advisor, International Programs
Melinda Lane - Dental Hygiene
