* COSMETOLOGY STUDENTS PROVIDE COMMUNITY SERVICE TO TENT CITY RESIDENTS

SCC cosmetology students recently joined the local community effort to help the residents of Tent City 3, located at Calvin Presbyterian Church (CPC) in Shoreline.  Local schools, churches, businesses and individuals have been providing all kinds of services to the residents, and now the men and women who live there are getting free haircuts at the Shoreline Community College Campus Salon.

Donna Miller-Parker, former college employee and a member of CPC, is leading the church's outreach efforts.  She contacted Dean Susan Hoyne last month to see if it was possible for our cosmetology students to provide free haircuts for those staying at the shelter.  Hoyne said she would look into it, and after VP Daryl Campbell approved them, vouchers were provided to the men and women at the church tent city site.

“It’s great that our students are helping others in our community,” said Hoyne.

Jeanine Ghighi, cosmetology instructor, has been in charge of the student project.  "Several people have already come in," she said earlier this week.

"They get to come here just like everybody else."  Ghighi and the students are looking forward to helping as many of the homeless people as possible.  The vouchers are good through March 19.

The men and women are taken to the salon by church volunteers or travel by bus using vouchers from the SHARE/WHEEL (Seattle Housing & Resource Effort/Women's Housing Equality and Enhancement League.

Other SCC folks helping out are Susan Leonhardi, Puget Sound Automobile Dealers Association, who organized a volunteer group from the church and neighborhood to ensure children can walk safely to and from school, and Judy Burrows, Testing Center, who is a member of another local church who recently donated $1,000.

If you would like to donate used clothing, bedding, etc., please drop them off at the church camp at 18826 - 3rd Avenue NW in Shoreline.  The site is on the south end of the church property on a hillside.  Just park at the entrance and someone will come out to help you unload.  If you have additional questions, contact Leonhardi at (206) 546-6626.
