* SCC Grad, Lucas Meserve receives fellowship to University of Copenhagen

Commencement 2009 027.jpgSCC 2008 graduate Lucas Meserve will head to Denmark in July to finish his undergraduate degree at the University of Copenhagen.  A senior at the University of Washington, Meserve will complete his bachelor’s of science in economics while studying at the University of Copenhagen thanks to a $14,000 fellowship.

Meserve, who wanted the opportunity to focus on agricultural economics (which the UW didn’t provide), found the program with
the help of UW economics Prof. Claus Pörtner. Although the fellowship is designed as a master’s program, Meserve learned that UW International Programs will count the credits earned at Copenhagen toward his undergraduate degree.

“I’ll actually be completing my bachelor’s degree from the UW at the University of Copenhagen,” Meserve said, who will be concurrently enrolled at both schools.

Beyond his interest in living in a European city and studying in a very different style of education, Meserve is looking forward to spending a year in Denmark, saying this will be his first time traveling in Europe.  Copenhagen “is one of the most sustainable cities on the planet,” he said.

He said that his ultimate goal is to continue academic work in the field of food, natural resource, and development economics – focusing on the economics of alternative agricultural systems such as organic as compared to industrial agriculture and how it relates to resource use and how that information can be applied to international development.

Meserve, who leaves for Denmark in mid-July, said that he will complete the program and graduate Summer Quarter of 2011.

“Winning this fellowship is really the highlight of my time at the university,” Meserve said of the UW.  An SCC grad (2008), Meserve was active in student leadership at Shoreline.
