Library Orientations and Information Literacy Sessions
Our librarians can come to your classroom or computer lab and show students
information sources available to them on campus and online. We can customize
these sessions for your class – anything from helping them focus their topics to
searching for/evaluating web sites to correctly citing sources. Students should
already have their assignments before the orientation. If you would like to
schedule an orientation session, please visit
this page.
Here are some suggestions for instructors who want to
schedule library/media center orientations
and who plan to have classes come to the library/media center to do research.
These suggestions are designed to avoid any conflicts and maximize the use of
our resources.
- Please
schedule
your library/media center orientation at least a week ahead of time. We
encourage instructors to give their students any research-oriented assignments
prior to their library visit so that librarians can better focus their
instruction. Please give the librarian conducting an orientation for your class
a copy of your research assignment prior to the orientation session. We expect
instructors to be present with their class during the orientation.
- If you are sending students to the library with a research assignment to
complete on their own, please drop a copy by the library Reference Desk ahead of
time, so that we are not caught by surprise by dozens of students needing the
same resources. If there is one specific item (book, periodical, video, etc.)
that your students will need, it might be a good idea to have us put it on
Reserve for your class. Call X4408 or X4556 to arrange for Reserve materials.
Feel free to call a librarian if you'd like help designing a research assignment
for your class. We'd love to help.
- Please let us know in advance and, if possible, provide a copy of the class
assignment if you plan to bring your class to the library so we are prepared for
them when they come.
