International Baccalaureate Credit

Shoreline Community College encourages and applauds students who have chosen International Baccalaureate (IB) courses as part of their high school curriculum. These courses are challenging and demanding, and we believe they provide excellent preparation for university study.

Students who engaged in college-level study in high school through an IB program can obtain credit towards a Shoreline Community College degree, placement in advanced classes, or both, on the basis of their performance on IB exams.

How to Use IB Credit

  • for placement into advanced courses: present an original copy of IB test results to Enrollment Services
  • for credit: have the IBO to send scores to Enrollment Services.

Posting of IB credits may be requested after successful completion of 10 Shoreline Community College credits.

Please note: Students will not be granted additional credit if credit has been awarded for an equivalent college course.

How Much Credit is Awarded?

A maximum of 45 credits may be awarded to students with an IB diploma and appropriate scores on individual subject exams. In most cases, five credits are granted for each higher level subject in which a score of 5 or higher is earned. For example, a student's transcript would be noted as “English IB Credit 5.0.” A maximum of 30 credits may be awarded; however, not all credits may apply toward a Shoreline Community College degree or certificate.

Below is a chart detailing specific subject areas and credits.

Students who earn an IB diploma may be awarded an additional 15 general education credits, distributed equally among the three General Education areas: Humanities, Natural Science, and Social Science. These are required for the Associate in Arts - Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA), Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) and the Associate in Sciences Transfer (AS-T) degrees. General Education credits can also be used in the Associate in Arts - Individualized Plan (AA-IP), and the Associate in Music (AM) .

Placement and prerequisites for Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics and courses with math prerequisites

If you are using IB to meet prerequisites for a course in one of these departments before the credits are officially recorded, please contact the appropriate department for registration assistance. ECON& 201, PHIL& 120, PHYS 110 are handled by the Mathematics Department.
