The Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) outreach manager, Dr. Jan Chalupny, joined the ABE team at Shoreline Community College in 2015. Jan received her PhD in Biology from Yale University, where she studied the role of the CD8 molecule in T cell signaling. She did her post-doctoral research at Bristol-Myers, Squibb, where she studied signal transduction via multiple immune cell receptors. Dr. Chalupny has spent almost 30 years in the biotechnology field, the last 18 with Immunex/Amgen. Her research resulted in the identification of NKG2D as the receptor for the ULBP proteins and the elucidation of the role of NKG2D/ULBP interaction in stimulating NK cell cytotoxicity. More recently she worked on a team involved in optimizing the properties of the BiTE (bi-specific T cell engager) molecules, novel anti-cancer therapeutics. Jan has been involved in science education for the past 2 decades, working with local leaders in the field at SEP (Science Education Partnership) and NWABR. She has received the NWABR Partner Award, the NWABR Alvin J. Thompson Award and the Washington State LASER Award for this work. Jan enjoys developing science curricula as well as mentoring science teachers and students. She wants everyone to know why science is cool! She has 27 scientific publications including papers in distinguished journals such as EMBO Journal and Immunity. In her spare time she enjoys hanging out with her family, running, skiing, travel and reading.
