Introduction 

The Education Program offers several options for students who are interested in working with children and families in a variety of settings.  We offer

•  Short-term certificates in early education (fewer than 90 credits)
• 2 year-professional technical degrees for those who are working or wish to work in settings that do not require a BA (90 credits)
•  A two-year degree that will transfer to a college or university for those who wish to pursue teacher certification or a 4-year or graduate degree in a related field. (90 credits)

Here is a description of what we offer and an overview of the special features of our program.

 

Certificates and Degrees  

We offer 2 Professional/Technical AAAS Degrees (Associates of Applied Arts and Sciences).  The options are: 

• Early Childhood Educator and Paraeducator
• Special Education

We also have two Certificates of Proficiency:

• Child Care Professional Cert Prof.
• In Home Care Provider Cert Prof.

And a short-term Certificate of Completion:

• Early Childhood Basics

Our Professional/Technical program is designed for students who are interested in working with young children (infants through 8 years of age) in early childhood settings, or with a wider age range of children, as assistant teachers/paraeducators in public schools.

 

We also offer an AA if your are interested in completing your first two years of study toward becoming an Elementary School Teacher.

 

This AA is designed to provide students with a broad liberal arts background of study during their first and second years of college with an emphasis on education.  

 

Our program is taught by 2 full-time, tenured faculty members:  Betty Peace-Gladstone and Tasleem Qaasim, who also serve as advisors for the program. They have extensive professional experience in early childhood and family service programs as well as strong connections with community programs in the greater Seattle area. 

 

 

Special Features of our Program 

• Multicultural focus:  Our program infuses principles of multicultural and anti-bias education into all of our courses, in recognition of the importance of preparing teachers and caregivers to work in our pluralistic society.
• Online Classes: many of our courses are online, our certificates and degrees can often be completed online.  Our faculty advisors can assist you with exploring this option.
• Credit for Prior Experiential Learning: This is an option for some students who have experience in early childhood settings, and have completed coursework elsewhere before coming to Shoreline.
• Transfer of courses from other Early Childhood Programs:  our faculty will work closely with you to maximize transfer of any courses taken elsewhere, to optimize your prior academic work.
• Articulations Agreements with 4 year institutions:  The Education program at Shoreline articulates well with many of  the four-year colleges in Washington for Early Childhood and Elementary Education programs.  We work closely with Mayville University in North Dakota, to offer the first two years of study fo ran online degree in Early Childhood Education, as well as a mostly online degree in Elementary Education.  Our faculty can tell you more about the opportunities to pursue a 4-year degree, starting at Shoreline.
• On Campus Lab School:  We collaborate with our on-campus childcare, the Parent Child Center, to provide a setting for practicuum and internship experiences for students.  We have numerous connections with a variety of other off-campus programs and public school settings for students who are interested in other options for practicuum and internship placements, as well.
