Hypothesis

Assignment Description: Write your research paper's current hypothesis clearly in three sentences or less. (The subject and topic will be evident from the hypothesis, so you do not need to express them separately.)

Purpose: This assignment helps you take an important step in focusing the research process. It allows the instructor to check your understanding of a research paper's scope and nature, and of the concept of a hypothesis and thesis. The assignment keeps you on schedule for the research paper due date.

Criteria: A good hypothesis/thesis should be clear, manageable and insightful (not just a statement of obvious fact). It must fall within one of the three subject areas specified in the Pick a Subject assignment. Click here for good example thesis or hypothesis statements in terms of insight and focus, but note that some of these statements do not satisfy the major paper subject area requirements. Yours should be just as focused and revealing, but within an appropriate subject area.

Format / How to Submit: Write in complete sentences. Send in the body of a course message. No attachments! Use "Hypothesis" and your name (no quotes) in the subject line. Instructor will approve and/or critique.
