What is Equity and Social Justice?
Equity has to do with everyone, regardless of race, social class, and gender, having access to fair and equal treatment under the law. Social Justice extends the concept of equity to include human rights as part of the social contract.
What is ESJ at Shoreline?
Equity and Social Justice includes American Ethnic Studies, Gender & Women's Studies, and Multicultural Studies.
Students develop awareness, knowledge, and skills in issues of race, social class, gender, ability, and sexual orientation, with emphasis on social action.
How does ESJ enhance student learning?
Equity and Social Justice is both a process and a goal. The process includes reading, writing, talking and thinking critically and well about a whole range of social issues. The goal is to use the skills you develop from reading, writing, talking and thinking in your spheres of influence.
What can I learn?
You will learn to explain, through various media, complex issues in race, social class, gender, sexual orientation, and often, religion and ability.
You will learn to talk about these difficult and controversial issues calmly and knowledgeably, with concrete examples from history and from your own experience.
