Math& 142: Homework

Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis and collected most Tuesdays at the beginning of class (NO late HW will be accepted).  I will drop your lowest homework grade when computing grades at the end of the quarter.  Please note that some students may find it helpful or even necessary to do more problems from the book than I assign.  You must be honest with yourself to determine whether you sufficiently understand the material, and if you don't, read and practice more.  To do well in this class it is essential that you do homework daily.  I expect you to spend about 10 hours each week on math homework, reading and studying.

You will earn a total of 10 points for each HW assignment:  up to 4 points for completeness of the entire HW assignment and up to 6 points for correctness (three problems will be selected and graded, 2 pts each).  You will earn a 0 on any HW assignment that is too hard to read;  or if you seem to have mindlessly copied another student's homework;  or if you allowed another student to mindelssly copy your homework.  Please check your answers to the odd-numbered problems in the back of the book.  Feel free to ask questions in class or during my office hours about any problems that you have questions on.  When handing in HW, be sure to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Use standard size paper (8.5" x 11") with no fringed edges.  Write your name on each page and staple pages together if there are more than one.
  • Write neatly using a pencil.  Do not cross out errors---erase them.  If you find yourself erasing extensively, stop and start again on a fresh page.  If you must use a pen, do not scribble things out.
  • Number your problems clearly and indicate what section they are from.
  • Circle or box your final answers.
  • Graphs must be drawn with a straight edge and axes must be labeled and scaled.
  • When doing word problems, you must define any variables you introduce and state your final answer in a complete sentence that includes units.  Problem solving steps must be shown clearly for all problems.  I will not give full credit unless I see your work.  Simply writing the answer is not enough.

NOTE:  You will earn a 0 on any HW assignment that is too hard to read; or if you seem to have mindlessly copied another student’s homework; or if you allowed another student to mindlessly copy your work.

In addition to the HW problems, worksheets may be assigned and collected as part of your homework grade. These additional HW assignments, and their due dates, will be listed in the table above.
