High School Completion

Students in this program take classes and make preparations for completing a high school diploma and transferring to university at the same time. This allows students to begin their college-level studies early and go on to finish their four-year degree early too.  Note: students who require additional English language training may require some extra time. 

You will receive an official Washington State high school diploma, recognized nationwide, and the credits you earn here at Shoreline will transfer to four-year colleges and universities throughout the United States.  

To be Eligible for this Program

• be at least 16 years old by the start of new student orientation
• be in strong academic standing
• finish the equivalent of U.S. 9th grade

 

 

High School Completion students take the same classes as other Shoreline students, and the credit they receive is used for two purposes:

1. to satisfy requirements for a high school diploma
2. to satisfy requirements for university transfer

This means that one class can provide two types of credit at the same time. Most students receive their high school diploma and transfer to university without requiring additional time.

To receive a high school diploma in Washington State, a specific number of hours of study are required in:

language arts occupational education general and lab science U.S. history health and fitness

mathematics contemporary issues fine arts Washington State history electives

Students will use the credits they already have from their original high school, plus credits from their Shoreline classes to fulfill those state requirements.

 

Get Higher Grades (GPA)

Shoreline highly recommends that students complete the associate's degree as part of their transfer preparation. Students who complete an associate's degree before leaving Shoreline have a significantly higher grade point average (3.54 on the 4.0 scale) compared to those who do not. Having the degree, plus a higher grade point average, will strengthen a student's application to competitive universities. The majority of Shoreline HSC students complete both their high school diploma and an associate's degree with no additional time required.

*The actual length of time a student will need to complete the associate's degree and the HSC program depends on the student's English and math abilities at the time of enrollment, as well as the actual number of credits taken each quarter.

 

What About My English?

Shoreline does not require international students to take the TOEFL exam for admission.  Instead, students' abilities in English and in math are evaluated by taking a placement test on-campus after admission and arrival in the United States.  The results of this placement test are used to place students in classes that will be appropriate for their English and math skill levels.  Students in the advanced levels of Shoreline's ESL program are able to begin taking college classes in combination with their ESL classes.

Living Arrangements

Shoreline contracts with two local homestay companies called ABODE and USA International, Inc. which have successfully placed thousands of students from all over the world with host families in the Seattle area.  These families are carefully screened and every effort is made to choose a good match according to individual needs and preferences.
