Library to Launch "Federated Search"
The SCC Library is working hard to make student research easier. One of the
most exciting developments in this area in years is the upcoming launch of
"Federated Search" for the Library's information resources. The SCC Library is
contracting with Seattle-based Serials Solutions to bring this powerful new tool
to you.
Federated Search will make finding the information you need much, much
easier. Currently, if you are looking for information on a particular topic you
need to use many different tools to find various types of information resources.
For instance, to find books you would use the
Library Catalog, and if you wanted to find electronic journal
articles, you would use one or more of the many
Research Databases
to which the library subscribes. All in all you might perform similar searches
in many, many different places in order to get enough information for your
project.
Federated Search simplifies the process by doing a lot of the legwork for
you. All you need to do is perform your search in one simple interface and the
Federated Search tool will look in all the different places for you. Your search
will be run against the library's physical holdings like books, CDs, and DVDs,
and also against the databases to which we subscribe. So your results from this
one single search will be much more comprehensive, and you'll only have to
conduct the search once!
The Library is very excited to bring this new tool to the students, faculty,
and staff of the SCC community. Look for the Federated Search tool to go "live"
sometime early in the fall quarter.
