Library/Media Faculty are happy to assist you with planning research instruction
for your students. Whether you plan to do the instruction yourself or have one
of the librarians do a
presentation for
your class, we can help. Give us a call at 546-6939 or make an
appointment to meet with your
division liaison.
Some Guidelines for Successful Library Research Assignments:
- Use the Shoreline Community College Libaray/Media Center as the primary
resource.
- Consult with a librarian, if possible, before giving students a research
assignment.
[Remember, you may arrange with a librarian to do a
presentation for your class.]
- Check for materials in the L/MC before giving the assignment.
- Make sure that limited materials are on RESERVE.
- Research assignments should be in writing as well as being given orally.
- Be specific about what type of material(s) or information is required
(periodicals, books, newspapers, etc.)
[Assignment-specific requirements may help prevent students "lifting" ready-made
bibliographies from the web or other students]
- Use a standard bibliographic format.
- Not everything is on the Internet.
- For things that are on the Internet, make sure students have guidelines
for how to evaluate for authority, accuracy, currency, content and bias.
- It may help prevent plagiarism to require students to submit progress
reports and/or drafts throughout the quarter on large research assignments,
instead of submitting one final paper at the end of the quarter.
- Contact a librarian if it appears that students are having difficulties
obtaining materials.
- Let the L/MC know how successful the research assignments have been.
- Keep the Library informed about new materials needed to update the
collection.
