My life has included long stretches of living, working, traveling, studying and research outside of the U.S. where I was born. These stretches have included time in Spain and Northern Africa, China, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea, and Canada. All these experiences have fueled my fascination with the process of communicating across cultures and difference. I was drawn to Shoreline Community College, in part, because of the wonderful opportunities there are to work with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and places. I believe strongly that learning should be interactive and experiential so my classes include stimulating discussions, fun learning activities, and a variety of media experiences.

My life experiences have informed both my learning and my teaching. My studies have always centered on border crossing people, whether those borders are linguistic, cultural, national or economic. My graduate work focussed on ethnographic studies of speech communities as varied as South Korean immigrants in an Iowa town, ESL teachers working abroad, migrant laborers in South Korea, and women students of a distance education university in Indonesia.

I have taught at universities in Iowa, Canada, South Korea, Indonesia and Ohio before coming to Shoreline Community College. I have also worked on government-funded educational projects in Indonesia and the People's Republic of China. Recently, I am pursuing professional development in Nonviolent Communication, multicultural understanding, and service-learning.

Outside of teaching, I love reading, biking, kayaking, rock climbing, creating and traveling with my husband (and, of course, my kids and grandkids).
