Graduates of the two-year Associate of Applied Arts and Sciences Degree in HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, upon successful completion of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) national certification examination, will join those professionals who use the credentials, RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician). This professional is skilled at processing, coding (ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS), classifying, abstracting, analyzing and managing health information using the latest manual and computer technology. This individual works in a variety of settings including hospital inpatient acute care, long term care, clinics, mental health, home health, hospice, rehabilitation centers, government and other agencies. Positions include inpatient and outpatient coders in hospitals and clinics, release of medical information technicians, cancer registrars, medical information abstractors, quality improvement assistants, and health information managers.

 

Graduates are eligible to write the American Health Information Management Association's (AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist - Physician's Office (CCS-P) examination or the entry level Certified Coding Associate (CCA) for hospital inpatient coding. They are also eligible to write the American Academy of Professional Coders Certified Professional Coding (CPC and CPC-H) examinations. The AHIMA mastery-level Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) examination is also available, although it is recommended that individuals do inpatient coding in the hospital setting for several years before taking this advanced credential.

 

The Health Information Technology Program at Shoreline Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Graduates of the MEDICAL CODING AND REIMBURSEMENT SPECIALIST program (Certificate of Proficiency) will be prepared for positions as inpatient and outpatient coders (ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS) as well as billers, patient accounts representatives, and other support positions in medical offices, hospitals and other health care facilities.

 

Graduates are eligible to write the American Health Information Management Association's (AHIMA) Certified Coding Specialist - Physician's Office (CCS-P) examination or the entry level Certified Coding Associate (CCA) for hospital inpatient coding. They are also eligible to write the American Academy of Professional Coders Certified Professional Coding (CPC and CPC-H) examinations. This program at Shoreline Community College has received formal Approval Status as a Comprehensive Medical Coding Program by the American Health Information Management Association, the only program in the state with this award. This designation acknowledges the coding program as having been evaluated by a peer review process against a national minimum set of standards for entry-level coding professionals.
